For 30 years, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet has nurtured a love of dance for the cultural enrichment of two arts-minded cities in the American West: Aspen, Colorado and Santa Fe, New Mexico. Believing that dance is for everyone, the organization manifests its passion across a multifaceted spectrum of community offerings.
ASFB’S pioneering spirit proved a valuable resource throughout the staggering Covid-19 crisis. Unique in our lifetimes, the dance world went still. ASFB’s ethics, creativity, innovation, and resilience led us to a bold reinvention. A newly launched structure is designed to facilitate the nimble execution of our mission while protecting our longtime programs.
Dance lives within us all, from youngsters taking their first ballet class to audiences feeling their hearts leap at live performances. Your support spurs the return of this powerful art form to Aspen and Santa Fe. We invite you to dance into the future with Aspen Santa Fe Ballet.
Patience and perseverance have guided our return to live dance presentation. After a hiatus of almost two years, we are poised and ready to shine again, as we bring you one of America’s most electrifying dance companies: Complexions Contemporary Ballet this March. Plans are underway for a full summer season of dance in 2022. ASFB Presents is recognized as one of America’s leading dance-exclusive presentation series. Our commitment to excellence is on view in the culturally and ethnically diverse roster of dance companies we have presented: Alonzo King Lines Ballet, Alvin Ailey II, Ballet West, Complexions Contemporary Ballet, Diavolo, Grupo Corpo, Hong Kong Ballet, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Joffrey Ballet, Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal, Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, MOMIX, Nrityagram Dance Ensemble, Parsons Dance, Paul Taylor Dance Company, Pilobolus, and more. The anticipated return of our presenting series is cause for celebration!
Education is essential to ASFB’s mission. Throughout the pandemic, classes in our network of dance schools in two states continued, first on Zoom and now again in person. Our students persevered. Annual recitals were moved to a virtual format. These activities form our very roots in our communities and give children a needed creative and social outlet. Despite ongoing health guidelines, our educational programs are steadily recovering. The safety of our students and faculty remains our priority. We take particular pride in our alumni who have gone on to study at prestigious schools such as: Ailey/Fordham University, American Ballet Theatre, Bolshoi Ballet Academy, Boston Ballet, Interlochen Arts Academy, Joffrey Ballet School, North Carolina School for the Arts, and San Francisco Ballet School. Seeing the optimism and joy in the faces of aspiring young students—even if wearing masks—fuels our motivation and gives us hope.
The award-winning ASFB Folklórico, founded in 2000, has enriched the lives of thousands of local children through free, after-school classes in Mexican folkloric dance. Serving six locations in the Roaring Fork Valley and Santa Fe public schools, the program promotes positive youth development, creative expression, and the crossing of cultural boundaries. The pandemic’s devastating impact on the Latino community makes this program a wellspring of hope to many youth as well as a source of physical activity and cultural pride. Today, when it is most needed, ASFB Folklórico continues in a safe environment that connects families and keeps traditions alive.
This groundbreaking new venture is dedicated to the 25-year legacy of our resident ballet company, retired due to Covid-19. The Fund’s mission is aspirational: it is designed to bolster the health and functionality of dance in a post-pandemic world. A first phase targets rebuilding existing programs in our home communities—ASFB’s widespread network of dance schools, administration of scholarships, and free Folklórico after-school program. As soon as it is safe to do so, we will again present live performances by the world’s finest dance companies. The Fund’s longer-range plans will address emerging needs of dance nationwide, using our resources to aid its invigorated return to American stages.
